Maren began playing the piano at age 6 and took lessons for 12 years. She continues to play for enjoyment and for the challenges of learning new pieces. Throughout high school, Maren attended local and state music festivals and received first place ratings on her solos. She also accompanied vocalists and instrumentalists. In addition to being a pianist, Maren also plays clarinet. A member of Montana’s All-State Band all four years of high school, Maren entered Luther College on a music scholarship. While at Luther College, she played in the Luther College Concert Band, the Luther College Symphony Orchestra, and the Luther College Woodwind Quintet. With the Luther College Symphony Orchestra, Maren played principle clarinet during the orchestra’s 1988 European tour. The concerts featured Aaron Copland’s “Rodeo Suite.” In addition, Maren played principle clarinet in three of the college’s performances of “The Messiah,” under the direction of Weston Noble. She would like to start a woodwind quintet here in Door County.
